El conjunt perico havia disputat el triangular de la fase de grups enfrontant-se al Athletic Club amb el que va perdre 0-1. El xoc entre bilbaïns i la Selecció de la Rioja va acabar amb taules. En el darrer partit l’Espanyol va derrotar 2-0 a la Selecció de la Rioja, finalitzant en segona posició de grup.
Van quedar eliminats per quedar en tercera posició de grup, el Jàbac i Terrassa, l’Escola Futbol Arnedo, Sporting de Gijón i la Selecció Riojana respectivament.
Els enfrontaments de quarts de final al marge de l’esmentada derrota espanyolista van registrar el triomf (3-0) del Valencia CF sobre l’Athletic Club, el triomf del Kashiwa Reysol japonès (que donava una nota exòtica al torneig enguany) sobre la Real Sociedad i la victòria en la tanda de penals del Villarreal sobre el Sevilla després de finalitzar el partit amb empat a dos gols.
En la consolació, l’Espanyol s’imposava 1-0 al Sevilla FC i s’assegurava lluitar per la cinquena plaça. En el derbi basc el conjunt bilbaí derrotava a una Real Societat que acabaria sent vuitena caient també amb el Sevilla en el darrer partit. Els pericos no van pogué superar a l’Ahtletic Club en caure a la tanda de penals després d’arribar amb empat a un gol a la fi del partit.
En les semifinals, Real Madrid i Valencia van superar als seus rivals disputant una final en la que clarament l’equip madridista es va fer amb el triomf final guanyant 2-0 al conjunt che.
L’Espanyol supera amb aquest sisè lloc, el setè aconseguit la passada edició on va caure també en l’encreuament de quarts llavors amb l’Athletic Club. El Villarreal va ser el guanyador final del torneig. Enrera queda la XVI edició, en la que l’Espanyol derrotant al conjunt de la Plana a la final, es va fer amb el prestigiós torneig considerat com una espècie de campionat d’Espanya oficiós en categoria infantil.

Malauradament la fase final del torneig coincideix amb la disputa del RCD Espanyol – Athletic Club a Cornellà-El Prat. El “Joan Babot” també ha sigut víctima d’aquests estrambòtics horaris del futbol espanyol i ho pagarà amb una menor assistència, sobre tot lògicament de pericos.
